The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
While I found the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming looks especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year so far.
Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
